I think some people are exaggerating, I mean, even if he (spoiler) really just saw her from the memories of the sword and developed a crush (or even stronger feelings), the dude just thought his crush died. Like, she just went puff! like that and he wasn't able to do anything this time (and I'm pretty sure dudes intentions are to save her in this lifetime).
I mean, celebrities die or have something happen to them and fans cry and have mental breakdowns, but my dude worries and is sad about his crush apparent death and society, society calls him crazy.
