3 year time skip over what seems to be a silly misunderstanding is a bit much. I mean I'll eat my words if ML truly used to like that other idol and thought of MC as a replacement (even just initially). To me, it seemed like ML used to have a dog who looked like MC. Also, ML was never seen in even a remotely suspicious situation with that idol so, for MC to just up and run over nothing is a bit silly
