Ahhh finally some nuanced conversation! I’m super tired but I’ll try to write something coherent. Kim Dan has been parentified since early childhood. He has strong codependency issues. He has been BULLIED for not having parents. He knows is only family could die any time and he doesn’t seem to have strong bonds with anyone else. We’ve seen him have a friend but they don’t seem to be that close. His Grandma is his grandma, because of her age, she probably doesn’t how bad bullying can get at school. Also she’s super busy doing back breaking labor to FEED and house Kim Dan. In South Korea there are a lot of old people who are entrepreneurs and sell stuff at the market because they will NOT be hired. Plus they live in Seoul, so take that into consideration. (He was also probably bullied for being poor just like Jaekyung.) His grandma probably wouldn’t have taught him about emotional regulation and therapy is extremely taboo in South Korea. Furthermore Kim Dan is very sensitive to PEER PRESSURE just like a lot of Koreans. I seriously wonder how he made it in the Korean Army during his military service. But I digress. He smokes and he drinks. He resorts to drinking whenever he feels bad. How the fuck is he gonna learn to do better ??? He also BORROWED from loan sharks ??? If doing multiple jobs isn’t enough to cover rent in a developing area and your grandma’s bills (there’s healthcare in Korea it’s not like the USA) then maybe it is time to move on to palliative care. The lady is old anyway (I know it sounds insensitive but it’s rational) and Kim Dan needs to plan for his future. He also chose a career path where he knows he wouldn’t make a lot of money in. I understand going into physical therapy to help his grandma with her aging pains but come on… Kim Dan is 30 years old. He’s older than Jaekyung yet he cried at their first meeting. A grown ass man ??? Got black listed from being sexually assaulted and took it like nothing ???? I’m not trying to police a victim’s reaction but he’s too spineless, that old creep put his life and his grandma’s life in jeopardy but he’s just annoyed ??? I knew Kim Dan was on some bullshit when he started talking about how big of a responsibility taking care of Jaekyung was. JUST DO YOUR FUCKING J.O.B !! Don’t get emotionally invested in someone who doesn’t return the same level of care!!! OMG!! Kim Dan accepts way too much and sets himself up to be USED. Why the fuck are you so invested in Potato’s aspirations??? If it were Jaekyung I’d understand because he’d probably think something like “ I know what it’s like to not be seen by someone you admire” But Kim Dan always had his grandma’s affection. Even if she was a bit absent because of her work… That’s why I think Kim Dan isn’t in love with Jaekyung. He’s projecting and was looking for a replacement (to take care of) of his grandma because deep down he knows she’s about to pass. He needs to “save” someone. He needs to be useful because he doesn’t know who he is. That’s why his whole world came crashing down when Jaekyung willingly belittled his feelings. He was already projecting himself into a codependent relationship with him. But Jaekyung would never accept him with open arms because he’s hyper independent and therefore not open to any display of vulnerability. (At least he was). He even said in the glasses chapter that Jaekyung’s state is only hanging by by a thread and that someday something will break. Instead of thinking “ I should get my ass out of there before that” he thought “will I be able to help (save) him ?” Stupid ass. I swear people hate Jaekyung more as a top because Kim Dan is so pitiful. He is 30 goddam years old!!! In a decade he’s 40!!!! Imagine a 40 year old man crying sniffing because his crush from his toxic prostitution-situationship rejected him ??? Anyway not to be too tough on Kim Dan, just like Jaekyung he was unfortunately primed to be who he is.

It is also very telling of Asian Confucianism and how elders are prioritised even when it ruins the future of the next generation… oh and Jaekyung’s parents failing him falls into that : they expect shit from their kids even when they haven’t done right by them. I guess the conclusion is that the parents are the real CRIMINALS here…

I do appreciate your perspective and effort in putting them into words despite being tired... i do agree with what you're saying, its just seeing and being critical about dan as character and not only focus on jaekyung's character... definitely not hating on them as i love their complex characters but others are being one sided and not being fair in their criticism... criticism is DEFINITELY NOT BAD, it helps open things for us to better understand the characters, so i love seeing comments like yours...

I am comparing them as characters who equally have reasons and backstory to explain how they came to be... and i am not blaming them for having their personality as they do, gosh am not an author or anything to have that right, but just a reader and would like to point things out as i have the freedom in the comments section...

This is exactly why. A lot of the "worst" characters actually get shit on for what they did bcz they're actually meant to be evil but for JK a lot of the times get away bcz ppl find him hot and sexy even tho he literally raped doc dan multiple times and treated him like shit. None of that will ever change no matter how nice he gets in the future but that doesn't mean we can't be understanding if he has a sad backstory. I'm interested to see it and understand but forgiving is a different thing. How can u ever forgive rape?

I do understand what you mean by that and rape is ABSOLUTELY NOT forgivable in any way... i would just like to put emphasis on jaekyung's character created by the author, he was meant to have this personality due to his story that is gonna be told, i hope... also, their story started wrong due to the circumstances and a point to which dan affirmed to help despite knowing jaekyung's jinx and jaekyung exploiting it (￣∇￣") i mean, he did good stuffs but it won't forgive him doing the wrong things, you can't add sugar in piss and say its all good stuff now... i guess, it would help a bit if he ask forgiveness and elevate any frustration and anxiety that dan is feeling, so that is why i won't let go hope in jaekyung for now, and hope for dan's smiles to come back...

yes i think so, im pretty sure in every life carcel yearned for ines and always got revenge along with her brother, he fell for her in every life and followed that path so he gets the dream meanwhile ines chose the wrong people, as well as emiliano making the wrong choice

I am not exactly sure but I read it in a spoiler that Ines married Carcel in her first life they loved each other but she was subjected to scheme and lost her pregnancy leading to severe depression and death by poisoning, than she returned to past and forget that life and married Oscar that was a mistake because she was suppose to be with Carcel, so she repeated her life again, again making a mistake marrying Emiliano and now in her fourth life she married Carcel so yes she made a mistake and remembered her last two lives. Carcel on the other hand married only Enes ever, he remained unmarried in both previous lives so he only dreamt about it not experience it. So in a sence you are correct.

oh! to think that she actually had 3 past lives is making me excited! the picture is slowly showing, yes! and to think that carcel REALLY loves Ines in their first lives and him only being able to love her out of the scene in those 2 lives is painful but beautifully romantic..

It’s important to understand that people with memories has the ability to manipulate other people from their correct path. Think of the regressors who change other people’s path because they have memories to change things. First crown prince manipulated Ines off her right path then Ines, in desperation to escape the crown prince, literally seduced Emiliano off his correct path. So all three of these people end up in tragedy and miserable. Carcel, on the other hand, always kept to his correct path but he always died outside of her predestined death.
