From my understanding, the church is taking shuri and Jermey to court on the suspicion of incest. That is a sin in their eyes and hence want to say that she is not fit to be the head of the family. They want the family to fall and crumble and no one really wants to step in and help under the pressure that if shuri loses (cause the church will play dirty) then their family will also look bad.

The church is taking shuri and Jeremy to trial for "incest" which is a sin, their justification being that shuri having no blood relation to the family cares for them too much even after the dukes death so that must mean that she's having an affair with Jeremy and thats the only reason for her caring so much for the family and being their "mother" even tho shes just as young herself. Now the church doesn't care if its true or not they're using the family cuz its one of the most powerful families as an example and basically saying hey nobles you see all this money and status cant save you from God's punishment if you dont listen to us the church. So really they're being used as pawns by the church to gain control over the nobles cuz rn the church and royal family are on the same level in terms of power but if the trial goes how they planned and they take down this powerful noble family the other nobles will be like oh shoot we gotta listen to what they say or we'll be next and basically they'll start to be more powerful than the royal family and slowly they'll turn the country into a theocracy which is a government ruled by divine law. Im sorry for the yap sesh but yeah that's basically it.
