A lot of stories deal with themes like this just to use them as narrative devices and not to treat them decently. They do it for a very banal reason and that is because they sell more. A story full of drama of various kinds attracts as many people as possible, so as long as the characters are cool, the complexity of the themes and the plot does not interest them. As long as it is dramatic to the point of leaving readers breathless and curious about what will come next that will lead them to spend money on the next chapters, that is.
