It’s important to know what you’re talking about. The focus of the story isn’t romance. The focus of the entire story is the mc taking care of the two children on the cover, watching them grow up and being with them during their struggles and happy times. The romance, last I checked, was barely there. Maybe hinted but most of it was the mc having a crush on the guy. The romance at most happened at the very end, where it was more open ended and they were looking to get engaged in the future. They don’t actually officially get together until maybe years later which happens in the second book.
But anyways, most of the people who rate the story highly enjoyed the MAIN story which involved raising the kids. There were moments where it fr made ppl cry cause there’s angst when it comes to raising kids lmao.
Also want to point out that at the time of release, the marriageable age for women was 16 in Japan, so by legal standards (in Japan at least) this type of romance story wasn’t considered a red flag or illegal. Of course to those of us in the West or in countries with other laws and traditions, it definitely strikes as illegal and immoral. It’s just one of those cases where we have to consider the cultural impact as well.
It doesn’t matter when the manga was made. The people reading it are from now. Which makes it weird. Currently it should leave people disgusted, but that wasn’t what I was seeing. Also just because something was tradition or cultural doesn’t make it ok. People knew it was wrong back then, which is why it led to the change of legal age. This manga is disgusting to me and I really just can’t just try to understand what’s obviously not right.
Yeah i get that. I first read this in middle school I think, and at the time I thought it was a cute story. I came across it again now, and started reading for nostalgia, but now that I have a more developed brain and better grasp of society, I am on the same page as you that it feels weird and unethical.
This raised my standards way too high. Like I don’t think I’ll ever have something like that.
I feel like y’all are trying to make this manga something it’s not. Like a lot of people are calling it problematic and for what. Like is it that crazy that he’s really smart and beats her at being #1. This is short read not a manga meant to dive into some deep shit.
