He got adopted into a family that had a child sociopath so he became one to survive, then the dude offed himself and he's not able to mourn and move on, does everything to surpress his emotions. The MC was a guy he"liked" in HS but his brother did things to him that he is yet to find out about, the MC dad was abusive so he ran away from home and cut ties with the ML until they met again as adults. It's pretty much misery and company at this point

Pleaseeee keep reading in my opinion it’s his way of coping with his past and all his trauma.

He kind of had imposter syndrome from his brother and since his brother is dead he tries to live as his brother in a way or it can also be seen as him trying to refuse the standards his family had put upon him. The story later reveals he never liked the drugs and stuff that much but he used it because those were the only times he could actually feel “alive” and not just live in the shadow of his brother.(￣∇￣")
