It sure is easy to romanticize what the husband did, but I think that comes from a place where most women kinda expect and accept assholes, and are desperate for guys who openly show their affection.
Personally, MAYBE I'd find the husband appealing but only if he wasn't aiming to confine her through potent misery. He clearly never showed her proper consideration ever, she's his object of desire, a trophy whose well-being will be sacrificed just to possess it.
