Addict's activites

So like the very beginning the two guys came and they said mom was in debt but mom wasn’t in debt??? I’m confused was she and they were right to be there or was she not and he was the target even though that wasn’t shown and mentioned if he came later he would’ve been fine. There was a couple other things I didn’t understand tbh and made it confusing to the story or maybe it was just me… it was tragic but not the craziest I’ve read cause of the inconsistency or not correcting things I should say. Once I think about more I’ll mention I just binged tonight
