The reason behind the love interest's parents demise as vague. Makes you think of many depressing possibilities as to how it happened.
I do wonder if his parents taught him all about survival skills, why did his mom die quickly? Was she properly equipped but in a bad state of mind when she decided to go out, which made her easy prey? Or was her survival expertise not focused on fighting, but she had no choice bec. she needed to look for her husband.
Maybe she has good fighting skills but just overwhelmed by a zombie horde. Or some shady folks took the opportunity to kill her for loot.
