I think he was just worn out from the mountain lack of rain/water and started getting better but was draining his life force because he was keeping the grandfather alive.

The first chapter got me with flashbacks of the series Scammed And Rammed, they even have similar color pallets and everything. Though this story looks like it's more plot heavy and the art is phenomenal so far
