I feel like the author’s just prepping us to get too attached to the characters until BOOM they drop a bombshell like ending it abruptly or them parting ways type of scenario and killing us on the inside! ! !

You can read it on its own. So far reading it, it didn’t feel like a continuation to the other story or related in any sort of way.
It's just a shared universe, Alpha Trauma is more like a side story rather than a sequel :)
