I know you said we can't do both, but I do think technically good characters can help drive the plot more than vice-versa. Well-written and unique characters can often make any story enjoyable, even if the plot is simple. If the characters are too boring, basic, or lack any depth, I could probably care less if the plot was good or not.   reply

It's a difficult question when you think about the logistics of it... talking to your past self could change the events that lead up to your current present, but talking to your future self could change everything after that.
