Honestly, the only part I judge him for a lil bit is that he made no attempts to make it easier to recover his memories.
Like, people who know they have memory issues do stuff to remember. He could've written literally anything down, and then they still could've shown the tragedy of it not working like it should anyway and it would've been even more heart-wrenching
