Y’all are confused, he didn’t say friend he said …friend. Three dots in the beginning is insinuating that he says something before the friend most likely boy. The author, most likely did that to give the effect of the gray hair main lead, not hearing the beginning of what brown hair said.
im pretty sure it’s supposed to symbolize hesitation rather than Luke not hearing what he said. Usually to display a difference in volume, authors will decrease the font size for quieter words and add some sort of mumble sound effect. This makes sense too because Andrew and Luke are not on the same level of understanding regarding their relationship so naturally he’d be hesitant on what to label it.
