Like first we aint in his position so ofc he probably always wanted his family to be together hence MC trying so hard... But like let's be so real there's no way he didn't see this coming like even in the comic it showed that he knew deep down that his father was only there for the money (actions, facial expressions, how he burned the money knowing this). But then again it's kindaa like going back to an ex that you know will end up hurting u and thinking "I can change him." It's just still hard to try and understand or sympathize w especially when you all saw it coming from a mile away.
Ppl saying he isn't dumb well it's kinda yeah sure, but no he is. Knowing something or someoen will hurt you but doing whatever (jumping off a cliff/hooking back up with your money hungry gambling addicted dad) anyways despite the warning signs is stupid. He is smart enough to recognize the signs but dumb enough to ignore. Sure there are people who can get help & he isn't stupid for hoping that could be it but he even believed that it wouldn't work out (which if you're gonna fix someone or wtv that isn't a great mindset) & even treated those around him like shit (which is dumb) because of his father.
