You get the impression from the first chapter that the rest will take on a more somber mood, but I suppose it was only to establish the dysfunction that would lead to Antoins immature and entitled nature. ironically, he lacks class and discipline for someone of noble birth, having much to learn from his servant. I do wish that the chapter with Antoine's cousin had honed in a bit more on his sense of self importance and mistreatment of the cousin rather than just his inability to control his emotions. but I suppose that it's a product of its time in that regard.
