My first time reading a "shotacon". I didn't even know. Where I saw it, it was labelled as psychology so lil old me was interested which themes of life were going to be dissected.
I think I see what the author tried to do there but I also must say she failed to a high degree on executing it with the care it needs, now I can only speak from the pov of a non abused heterosexual female.
The author hasn't seperated pedophilia and homosexuality the way it should have been. There are still people with too many misconceptions, so this has to be made very clear:
Homosexuality, consent between two men is not wrong!!
Pedophilia, sexual relations between adult and a minor no matter which age or gender involved IS WRONG.
I have been seeing a lot of comments about society. We have to for that further dissect what society is. Because it has a lot of bad connotations, please let's not forget that part of it is a knowledge pool. It's the only form of immortality humanity has the knowledge and experiences of tje past. PEDOPHILIA IS WRONG FOR A REASON. We are not talking about bodyshaming, racism whatsoever.
This is about a not fully developed child and someone who indeed is fully developed an adult.
That is all I can say here, I'm interested in actually discussong the materia of this manga.
Harada is not a mangaka that deals with heavy subjects, such as pedophilia and rape, with care. Her stories are twisted beyond repair.
The point of the story being, the man could not distinguish a healthy relationship vs an unhealthy one because of the trauma his parents brought onto him in his past and because of the relationship he had with an older man when he was a child.
He was raised believing that a man loving another man is basically some kind of sickness that needs to be "cured", so his parents forced him to have sex with a woman. This further complicated things because he truly believed he loved a man when he was only a child and that the man loved him, not knowing it was wrong.
This in no way excuses his actions though
Trauma affects everyone differently. Nobody deals with their demons in the same way. Take drug addicts, for example...maybe they wanted to escape reality, or because they're bored, or because of a trauma. They never intentionally started using drugs to become a junkie, but that's what happens. A sober person could have went through the same thing the junkie did, but sought the proper help. Why? Maybe they were raised differently or because they have a stronger sense of self, who knows. They didn't turn to drugs, though. In this case, he is stuck in a cycle. He did the same thing the old man did to him because he doesn't know any other way to deal with these demons. They just keep haunting him.
I believe if his parents took the time to get him help when he was young and weren't complete homophobes who only cared what others thought, he could've become a decent adult.
Hm, this was my first work and most probably the last I read by Harada unless there is other genres she has that actually fall into my line of interest.
I believe especially as an author or mangaka who tells stories about homosexuality it is important to make the research and write proper stories about it.
Especially if you dabblw in the yaoi genre. I think it's owned to the people that are being to a degree or highdegree fetishized in these storys.
When it also comes to shotacon, hm I am not familiar enough with the genre and I really don't wanna be...this concept is just way to creepy for me.
Yeah harada is well known for her twisted story lines. Here's a pretty much healthy couple by her though http://www.mangago.zone/read-manga/henai/ i am also not a fan of shotacon, perhaps because i have children. I find it very disturbing. But i am a fan of psychological stories and i feel the way this was portrayed shows the struggle of 2 broken people molded by their past in a very gritty but "real" way. A lot of manga show characters overcoming obstacles and ending on a light fluffy note, but life isnt always that agreeable. So these types of stories often show a harsh reality.
Yeah harsh reality is my favourite ending that's why I love psychocological but this made me aware I should pay attention if any other genre is in the mix.... It's also why I can hardly watch shojou it's just too sweet, faaar from real..
