Sht is layered and even after a few years of love and care there will still be fragments left of that pain. He has seen the ugliness of the world and its no surprise he will see things in a negative tone.
She picked her choice amongst all others and stood by him. He probably also feels like she deserves someone better and is pushing her away to find her happiness in someone else.
