I saw a spoiler from days ago that he was not the real father of the fl. he's like the uncle of her, and her father was the brother of this man. I'm only summing this up, so the reason why this "dad" of hers is up on the north is for him to kill a dragon and offer it to someone in exchange of the cure for fl. Another reason as to why some people view him as a bad "father" was because he didn't want to get attached to her? knowing she's fragile and might d-e any minute? (sorry for the question marks, my memory a bit hazy lol but that's the gist of it) but he truly care for her that's why he went to slay a dragon for her cure.
