I think he made the wish to protect her honestly. That why he gave her the gun in the first life not for her to kill herself but to kill the prince. Then in her next life her helped her when he saw them on the island he was at while in the navy. Then in her third life when she picked him he couldn't understand why she wasn't seeing him not knowing she was breaking down because all he wished for was to safe guard her in every life. Yet God deiced in her third life to gift him with memories of their pasted lives to help him understand her pain.
