You can feel sorry for someones past without forgiving their future wrong doings. You dont need much of a brain to undestand that. We also need to backstory to undestand the reason behind his behavior so that it can put more depth to the story, just like we got to see some of dan's past. (I dont understand this much passion for 2d character.)
