Like, the man is new to all these and he hasn't really addressed his personality or outlook in life because no one really cared about him and even at times of vulnerability, he was betrayed and abandoned by none other than his mom... The young him was able to survive because of his tenacity in life.
He's doing what he thinks he knows best but it's not with the idea of "getting away with it", it's just those are the things he observed and thinks that needs to be improved. He doesn't know how to say "don't go" yet, because he knows he's not really in a position to hang onto him, when clearly he hasn't fixed things yet. Things as simple, he wouldn't dare think important, because no one did for him. Dan doesn't know that, and so he keeps pushing. Jk on the other hand, doesn't really touch on his vulnerability, so even more that both of them don't meet halfway to the idea of being there for one another...
