I haven't read the novel, but I have read a looot of transmigration manhwas and I think they have lived at least 3 lifes, the first is the original sad story, the second where they're friends but end up apart and he "casually" encounters the book with the story of the first life and the third is the one they're living now thanks to the second life, the book novel was the thing that made him transmigrate to be happy in this life I think (I'm not sure about this, is a possibility haha)
