Perhaps unintentionally, the monster baby is a parallel to how disabled children are treated. Often, when mums find out that the baby they’re having is (severely) disabled, they have to make a difficult choice. The mothers that choose to keep the child, are looked at awfully “You don’t know how the child will behave.” “Why keep the baby, you’re only going to be unhappy.” Not only do they have to deal with the emotional turmoil of potentially losing their child they’ve been carrying for months but they’re often judged and deemed selfish. Even though taking a chance on your child is the most selfless thing you can do, especially when mothers are the ones who truly labour.
