I don’t think it makes it normalized IRL. These stories are very obviously fiction; I would in no way support this relationship IRL but I like reading about it and I’ll root for it here. There’s probably a psychological reason why that I’m not aware of, but there are a shocking number of people who like reading toxic or dark romance, and most of those people don’t let it carry over into IRL. I get your point and I do wish there were more fluffy BL, but I don’t like the insinuation that stories like this normalize rape. I promise you they do not (so long as 12 year olds aren’t reading them )

I understand but I think the problem is more nuanced than that. There are many levels of rape culture, and many forms of rape in media. To me there is a huge difference between full-on rape porn and a book like Haunting Adeline/a webtoon like this. The biggest difference is the target audience: men for the former, women for the latter. I think real rape porn does have a horrible impact, especially on the men who watch it who then think it’s okay and the women who are affected by it. But something like this is more fiction-based, and read for a different reason. There are so many people who read stuff like this who do not condone rape or assault. To say that they think it’s okay/are desensitized to it because of stuff like this is baffling to me. I think women’s enjoyment of content like this does say something interesting psychologically, but I myself cannot name what that is. Maybe when society is more egalitarian it won’t be as common in womens lit, but for now it is.
