I like the backstory. Most of the time, abusive behaviours are learned and amplified throughout childhood and adverse experiences. Most people aren't abusive by default
It's normal to feel uncomfortable. Recognizing issues and trying to change despite irreparable damages is uncomfortable in itself. It's a difficult path to walk

Your opinion is valid. I personally felt he was very aware of all the things he'd done and even admits to not believing he can fix any of it despite his desire to. Perhaps the author could have written this arc in a more accessible manner, so more people can agree with their writing
