Here's an interesting paradox. I feel that I like his past self more, that he makes sense as a child and a younger adult more, he had principals, determination, ambitions but now what? Did all the fortune make him such an asshole? The author showed his very difficult childhood in order for us to sympathize with him but during that period he was the better person than in the present so if anything it makes you resent him even more ╮(￣▽￣)╭
