Yes that was the case for dear Gene, Gene's reflections on the world he discovers and the complexity of the characters really moved me, I had to pause during a scene to think about what Gene was saying because I had realised that what was banal in my life was not necessarily so for someone else I highly recommend it (≧∀≦)

i'd like to sentence the author to the same kind of treatment they wrote in their stories.

I remember the names but not the stories well. It sucks when I reread stories I thought were amazing 5-10 years ago but I've grown out of them and they aren't good to me anymore.
