The story is just beginning, and you want him to already be a whipped, devoted puppy? BORING!!!! Where's the fun in that? The tension is the entire point. They are strangers in this life, the MC has no right to demand his loyalty, and he has no reason to give it yet.
But let's be real, if you're rereading and still can't see the layers of yearning hidden under that casual facade... that's a reading comprehension issue.
