why tf are they cousins

As I was reading this I was thinking about how there was no need for them to be cousins. The fact that they're blood related doesn't add a single thing to the story, and there are soo many different ways their relationship could've been established other than bc they are cousins. Also why tf does that keep being emphasized at the weirdest times????
