It's quite difficult to underwear because the translation is... Well. Wonky.

The Tono that keeps mentioned here and there should be tled as 'Lord' I think. So it's Lord of the East, Lord of the West, Lord of the South... Etc.

The plot is something like this:

Ushio used to work as a foot soldier who, in the past, was ordered to keep guard at the mansion where Yoshihime lived. Keep guard as in forbidding any residents to leave the mansion until reinforcement/soldier from Lord of the East's faction. (But since Ushio said he used to work under Lord of the West I'm gonna need a reread ASDFGHJKL)

Timeskip several years and Ushio retires. He returns to the village he grew up at. The villagers are in difficult times because all they have got taken away by West Faction soldiers. An envoy escorting Yoshihime who's to be wed to the South Faction passes by and dialogue happens.

Angry villagers decides to kidnap Yoshihime. Yoshihime is the owner of the hand who asked for food in the early pages. This and that, Yoshihime said she was saved by the kind lady who gave her a bean to reduce the hunger, and tells Ushio she'll be the person like that lady and be 'a bean' who ease other's pain, thus agreeing to be married off so her faction can get additional help.

Soldiers of her family patrols, looks around the village. The villagers are in danger bcs they'll be executed due to crime of kidnapping nobles, so Ushio takes Yoshihime to run away. They get caught be the soldiers quite far from the village and Yoshihime pretends Ushio + villagers saves her from danger.

This and that, Ushio decides to take blame of kidnapping Yoshihime, so that the villagers and Yoshihime can stay alive.

Something like that I think. And he's still running away, hopefully alive.
