He wanted to give her (the love of his life) a better chance at life so that she could go to college, fullfill her dreams and even find love and happy ending. That's why he left without telling her. He couldn't let her stay with him. But she didnt get the happy ending he wished for her. It's so heartbreaking. My heart breaks for both of them.
Every one every character may say "i deserve to know the truth, we are in this together" but same character will do the same as his dad did if they are on the other side of the story, they wouldn't want to let their love go through the pain and sorrow of losing them in such manner. As theo said he doesn't regret leaving even though he feels immense guilt. Haebom understood it too.

And remembering what happened to his mom . If she was alive, atleast we could be happy about reunion.
