In my opinion both love each other in a twisted way and want to be the whole world to the other. But since mc is really righteous he can't grasp the meaning of all this. And that's interesting because mc is really intelligent (I even think he's gifted) but he lacks emotionally.
In this case I think a happy ending with them loving each other would make sense since the love was already there before everything else happened.
I mean he teared up as he left him a letter and also only left in the first place to save his life + kissed him goodbye
I think the love is apparent but present day he just spent so long out in the world and built a life of righteousness that he can't step away from
