I can understand why some people feel a bit disgusted when seeing that zoom on the saliva and their tongues but I think it was purposefully made so. The aim of that scene is not to show eroticism or romanticism. They're kind of finding comfort and reassurance in each other.
That image when their mouth is filled with blood after kissing seems to depict how both of them are hurt inside and maybe that they hurt each other and might do it again in the future. But they can heal each other too.
