Gunner represents the first love you usually experience young when you have this naive thoughts that having each other and just being together is enough no matter the circumstances... But getting older you suddenly realize there is so much more to a healthy relationship however you still try to cling to the simplicity that "love itself is enough" although deep down you know that it just isn't. Growing apart, having different views and opinions and approaches towards things in life but not being able to let go of the person that represents your first love means it usually changes into a toxic relationship full of possessiveness and remorse that only cause you pain. You can love each other but love itself simply is not enough.
