If you introduce her backstop first, in a separate setting than the one the main character is, completely excluding him, then the reader will get attached to her even if she is arrogant because they know her arrogance can be backed by skill and a good reason to boast. But every time characters like hers (which end up being a love interest too for no reason at all other than she's a woman and mc is a male) are introduced first by being a complete bitch, and then wow actually the bitch who post pathetically after bragging about her skills has a sob backstop so you should feel bad! She lost her mom! Idc. I dont feel bad and I will continue to not like her even in the future when (this is a prediction) she eventually joins mc which then helps her find her mom and she falls for him in the meanwhile.
