People seem to disagree with how she’s going about a problematic child, and it does insinuate things about gender roles beyond this book. While I can disagree as everyone else about adding the little girl to the mix; I agree from an adult standpoint that peers are the more impactful voice and the parent’s presence (not voice) heavily impacts children. BUT in an educators setting, it’s bullsh*t from personal experience, peers are not corrective forces. That is a lot of pressure and undue stress on a child. Not to mention the risk; speaking as someone whose school counselor who called me in to “coerce” a “friend” who has been sent to juvy, later in life got an ankle monitor, probably had access to a handgun, and needed a grown a** man to watch him… yeah. And the last thing you want to do is completely step away from the situation. The only defense is she spent that entire session being by her side, possibly to observe his reaction. But it feels too… one-note as if she doesn’t have a plan b.
