Gosh I hate this plot line. Number one, if you want each other that badly, your sex life is obviously not getting stale. Number two, if you're going on an abstinence kick, you have to tell your partner! Preferably why, but at least that it was an intentional decision that had nothing to do with them. I really hope this sort of thing doesn't actually happen in real life because it is the stupidest of misunderstandings.
