I think everyone is misunderstanding, and jumping to the worst possible conclusion. He obviously said he hasn't answered yet, and not to say anything until it's finalized, isn't it most likely, that it's an engagement for his son? Also, her gaurdians are weird asf too if they're trying to marry her off to a grown man. I'm chosing to trust the Duke in this one.
ppl r way overreacting... but the arrangement Was supposed to be for Him and not his son. likely he didn't want to force anything on his son but didn't know how to handle the situation. it's obvious her guardians r the weird ones, n the duke is caught up in this political conflict to avoid more wars. i thought it was obvious from the start that the solution would end up being that eric would end up being engaged to her tho... idk why everyone assumed the worst immediately...
