Oh this made me realize that he knew all along the Luce actually bad feelings for him an loved him.. At least in my Perspective, it's been so long since I've last read the novel but the way he was so confident that Luce would not leave him gave me the impression that he knew, that once Luce fell he can never go back, he'll just fall deeper and deerper until he's forever stuck in the abyss, falling endless.
