They tried other method, they ran away, and meltier offered many options of how the MC could escape, some includes sacrificing the others while only the mc survive. The plan they showed here is literally a last ditch effort. But that intense decision making and initial fear wasn't really shown. Ig the animation team wants to fast the pace of the story.
