I'm not faulting the MC but his question was really leading. I know that he doesn't have to take responsibility for the both of them but he always acted the bigger person till now, they're whole dynamic is about MC and ML knowing their place and ML thought that he was essentially blackmailing the MC about their "affair" so not having that "affair" means he has no power over the MC.
