I’ve read stories where the nicest character actually turns out to be worse than the actual bad guy, so now every time a guy is overly nice in a manga I think he has an ulterior motive and I don’t root for the second male lead anymore due to disappointment

Why are they making it complicated? The MC is can't get his story straight and at least act like he likes the ML even in private. And the ML is too pushy and obsessive. If they could just chill, tell everyone they are in a relationship with someone, and communicate, the relationship would flow so much better.
