ppl overlook this story bc it's from the 90s, but it had the perfect balance of romance and plot (and we have the MC to thank for that since he's the one that didn't want to mix his love life with his career).

new york, new york (http://www.mangago.me/read-manga/new_york_new_york/). highlights the hardships of a how it's like to be a homesexual in 90s NYC. there are some dramatic aspects of course, but the realistic handling of the aftermath of rape as well as the topic of HIV/AIDs amongst gay men was interesting to see in a BL.
