I'd argue that he's been suffering from the beginning, and it was himself causing the harm. It's just that the consequences of his self-affliction were too much for him to handle so he externalised them towards Dan. Suffering shows differently for everyone, I think tying the championship and giving up on boxing for some years was the best and most meaningful form of suffering for Jaekyung, and also losing Dan. Because those are his weaknesses and his purpose.
