The fact that she is so conscious of the fact that she is gonna be dead at 18 and don't mind it. Like she had such a horrid childhood for her not being maltreated was enough to have a fulfilling life.
And the duke just realised it that she is very aware of her short lifespan and I think he is feeling bad about it.
I don't give him much more time before he officially adopt her.
