I'm always someone who never cares about the second couples in stories. But this one is really grating on me. They should've slightly teased this side couple having potential but still continuing the main plot. That creates intrigue and thus make people interested. Just shoe-horning them in for no reason doesn't add that— I don't care about the sick mother, I don't care about any of this.
