so here’s my theories:
1st theory: The animals dying reprents Dennis’s descent to madness. The more he falls in love with Todd, the more irrational he becomes. In every scene where their love sparks, an animal dies in return.
2nd theory: Todd is NOT a coyote, but rather the coyote is a symbolism of who he is. A hunter. Todd likes meat, and he simply just loves hunting animals and killing them. Sheep to be specific.
3rd theory: Todd probably saw the previous employers of the farm owner as obstacles. They were like some kind of barrier to his prey (the sheep) and the reason why the employers would just dip during the job is probably because Todd would try to kill them just so he could get to the animals. The animals run when they see him, so it only makes sense that they already know who he was and what he has done to them. He definitely viewed Dennis the same way he did the other employers until ch.6 where he killed a sheep for him, he knew he didn’t have to care about anybody blocking his way to his prey anymore. He had someone he could use now to get what he wanted and to him, that was what love was. Having someone be deluded to his level of madness and willing to be used just for his own trust and love was all Todd wanted from Dennis.
