I think this because the curse seems to be age related and the duke who is the king's half younger brother seems to be affected by the curse now. I think that is just to show how much he loathes her. The late emperor never hated Selena, for what I understood, it was like the curse projected his jealousy and insecurities to force him to hit her. The duke sounds "cuerdo" (idk how you say that in English, sorry), as if he knows what and why he's doing that to Tatiana.
I have seen plenty of scumbag was controled by magic, brainwashed and stuff so "it wasn't his fault". And I hardlyever buy it because it's rare the occasions they do forgivable things.
